The history page shows how our KOFUKAN association evolved and we are, of course, very proud of our heritage.

We train with a balanced approach to all aspects of Karate, including competition, which means we can offer a very complete martial art which can benefit all practicioners both physically and mentally. Karate is unique in that people of different ages and abilities can all practice together. While Karate is a dynamic and physical activity our training can be tailored to suit the individual.

Many believe that Karate is only comprised of kicks and punches but in reality Karate has many throws, takedowns, strikes, locks and immobilisations and when studied correctly offers a very comprehensive system. We believe the three "Ks" of Karate are very important Kihon (Basics) - Kata (Forms) - Kumite (Sparring) and as our history page shows our style developed through the practice of different systems which means that by joining SHITO RYU KOFUKAN, either as an individual or a group, you will have access to the best proven Karate principles.

SHITO-RYU KARATE-DO KOFUKAN

What Kofukan Means

"Tiger Wind Establishment"

KO (Tiger) FU (Wind) KAN (house). The tiger represents the hard, crisp direct movement typified in the Karate practised in the Shuri-te style of Karate, Wind represents the more supple, circular movemts typical of the Naha systems.

About Our Badge

Badge LogoThe circle in our badge represents the "Hara" (Centre) which must remain strong as all techniques should come from this point. The circle also signifies harmony.

Three swords (Katana) represent three very important aspects of Karate training. Shin (Mind) Gi (Technique) Tai (Body) and eminating from the very centre pass through the circle binding them together.

The caligraphy inside the circle is the mame of our style -SHITO RYU and on the outside is the name of our Association -KOFUKAN.

Finally, black & gold are used as they are the same colours as the tiger.

Dojo Kun (Motto)

In KOFUKAN we use Master Chojiro Tani's original Dojo Kun (Training Hall Motto). Although comprising of only six words its simplicity still covers the core values of Karate.

SONKEI - Respect

NINTAI - Perseverance
